A tax code consists of several numbers and a letter, for example: 117L or K497.
If you multiply the number in your tax code by ten, you will get the total amount of income you can earn in a year before paying tax.
The number reflects changes to allowances.
L = Basic Personal Allowance - 747L for the 2011-12 tax year. Also used for 'emergency' tax codes.
P = 65 to 74 and eligible for the full Personal Allowance.
Y = 75 or over and eligible for the full Personal Allowance.
T = Other items: eg the income-related reduction to the Personal Allowance. '0T' means allowances have been used up.
